Southwark give go ahead for ten primary school projects

Southwark Council has given the green light for work to start on ten primary schools. Keegans are the quantity surveyors across all schools within this programme which includes £61m of new-build, extensions and refurbishment projects throughout the borough.

AJ magazine reported on this on 28th May and according to Southwark’s cabinet member for children and schools, Victoria Mills: ‘Every project in the programme, whether new build or refurbishment, is aiming for design excellence – the creation of schools that are welcoming, attractive and scaled to suit the wide range of users who will come through the door.’

Proposals for Cherry Garden, Ivydale, Keyworth and Crawford primary schools involves a ‘kit of parts’ approach which is being adapted to each of the four sites. Work on all the schools is set to complete in 2017.

Bruce Glockling, head of regeneration –capital works and development, London Borough of Southwark commented ‘As a key part of a £4 billion regeneration portfolio, Southwark Council is investing £100 million in primary schools across the borough to meet the growing demand for primary school places. The programme includes the expansion of eleven existing schools, including four new build schools, one brand new free school, and a new primary special school on a new site. ‘Ten schools currently have planning permission and all 12 projects are on track to be delivered to enable expansion in September 2016.

‘The council team are working closely with the schools and a team of award winning architects to produce innovative designs using high quality materials. All schools will meet BREEAM very good standards. ‘As an inner city borough, Southwark is home to a diverse community with a broad spectrum of needs. The provision of high quality education and childrens’ services is fundamental to improving the potential of young people in the borough.

‘In Southwark we strive for high quality schools for local families and communities. School buildings are designed to be welcoming, safe and, above all, inspire learning. To attract and retain the most talented teachers, we are also providing state of the art teaching and work places that are fit for purpose. ICT is an important factor in delivering Southwark’s vision for education and learning and with the support of state of the art technology, learning can extend beyond the school day and school building.

‘Southwark’s Primary School expansion programme takes place in the context of the wider sustainability agenda. The new and remodelled buildings will be more energy efficient and better maintained, minimising life cycle costs. The schools built and refurbished today will leave a strong legacy for the borough’s future young people.

‘Every project in the programme, whether new build or refurbishment, is aiming for design excellence – the creation of schools that are welcoming, attractive and scaled to suit the wide range of users who will come through the door. Once inside, teaching spaces and technologies will be used to stimulate learning.

‘Schools will also help educate and inspire users about the sustainable use of resources by incorporating renewable energies, natural ventilation, recycled or renewable materials and finishes, and demonstrating ecological values during the management and operation of the building.’
