Roundwood Youth Centre Shortlisted for SCALA Civic Building of the Year
Roundwood Youth Centre in Willesden has been shortlisted for the SCALA Civic Building of the Year for 2013.
Keegans were commissioned to provide cost consultancy services to complete the new build Roundwood Youth Centre on the site of the existing building. The new 15,069 sq ft hub, which replaces the former youth centre building, is being financed by a £5 million grant which is funded through the Department for Education and administered through the BIG Lottery Fund scheme.
It boasts an internet café and kitchen servery, performance space and function hall, dance, music and recording studios, MUGA, local council and SME commercial offices, roof terrace and outdoor performing arts space and, it is hoped, will increase the abilities, aspirations and confidence of some of the most disadvantaged young people in the borough.
The building was constructed using the latest and most innovative technologies, sustainable and eco friendly materials which were designed to reduce both build time and cost as well as minimize future maintenance costs for the occupants and the Council. The ultra-modern facilities are also available for use by residents, charitable organisations and SME’s in the wider Harlesden, Stonebridge and Willesden communities.
The SCALA Civic Building of the Year Award is a celebration of the cream of public sector architecture. The aim is to inspire and promote the high quality of work carried out in the public sector and as evidence of the depth of design and management skills available to create such stylish and practical solutions.
