St. Andrews – Erskine Church
St.Andrews – Erskine Church was completed in 2006, and is located within the residential area of Bellyeoman, to the north of Dunfermline. With the recently developed nursing home, health care unit, doctor’s surgery and retail facilities nearby, the site was regarded as an ideal location for a modern church which would enhance the character and support the regeneration of the area.
Keegans were appointed as Quantity Surveyors and CDM Co-ordinators in association with our sister company ECD Architects to design a church building, for the relocation of an existing congregation, that would benefit the community but not impose itself on the existing environment. The church would accommodate different activities while retaining the dignity of worship in a space so designated.
The main objective was to design the building in a manner appropriate to its function, have a strong physical presence, and be open and inviting to the public. The Client stressed their aim for the end result being in effect a “shop window” to the mission.
The Church of Scotland expressed preference for an innovative approach to the design rather than the use of traditional church building forms. Their wish was for the building to be economic in operation but not cheap in appearance.
The cost of works was to be partly funded by the Church of Scotland Mission and Renewal Funds. The sale of the existing Bellyeoman Church provided the Mission with additional monies with the aim to allocate appropriate amounts to support the new church building.
Pre-contract consultations and extensive design development have resulted in the construction of a building that is appreciated and utilised by the church congregation and surrounding community.
